2005 was a classic vintage in Oregon. The growing season was ideal for Pinot Noir: moderate in temperature and leaning towards the cool side, even through the summer. The fall brought intermittent rains, leading to a long and spread out harvest. The result of this vintage is elegant wines with moderate alcohol levels (13.5% average) and bright natural acidity.
We began harvest September 24 at Stoller Vineyards, and concluded October 20th. The blocks selected for our JV Pinot Noir come from our newest plantings in the vineyard, while the fruit used in this Estate bottling are from our older vines.
Our 2005 Stoller Estate Pinot Noir was produced by de-stemming the grapes into steel fermentation tanks, where the grapes spent between 7 to 10 days cold soaking before fermentation started. Approximately half of the Pinot Noir was fermented with native yeasts; the other portions were inoculated with several different commercial yeast strains. After fermentation, the wine was put into barrel to undergo secondary fermentation and evolve for approximately 10.5 months prior to bottling.
